Just weeks after Ron retired from his position as Senior Pastor at Elim Evangelical Free Church in Oak Lawn, IL, and just six days before our move to California, an unbelievable opportunity was dropped in our laps (really, it came from God. A parishioner from Elim proposed to Ron that we move to his home in Palos Heights. From this offer, a vision was cast, and a ministry was birthed, named Sojourners Rest.
Karen reflects: "When I was a young newlywed, I read L'Abri by Edith Schaeffer seven times. In the book she tells of her work in Switzerland with her husband, Francis Schaeffer, of taking in students and young people from all over the world and ministering to them with hospitality and teaching. I prayed many times that God would give us that type of ministry some day. While thinking of Ron's retirement I prayed that God would give us something we could do together. What I did not know as a young newlywed was that this dream would come to fruition several decades later. With the support of the governing board and backing from the Great Lakes District of the Evangelical Free Church of America the concept of a resting place for ministry workers became a reality."
